Miami Jewish Federation Seeks Volunteers for Hurricane Season

Hurricane season began on June 1. While some catastrophes can never be fully prevented, the best defense in dealing with them is to be prepared.

For the sixth consecutive year, the Jewish Volunteer Center of the Greater Miami Jewish Federation is embarking on a campaign to organize the Jewish Volunteer Emergency Response Team (JVERT), a data bank of volunteers who will be called upon to assist in the event of a hurricane or other emergency in our community.

Volunteers of all ages are invited to attend the next Volunteer Responder Training and Orientation session on Wednesday, July 21 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center, 20400 N.E. 30th Avenue, Aventura. A kosher lunch will be provided during the session at no charge, and there will be no solicitation of funds.

Training by the American Red Cross will include: how to lead volunteers in projects if a natural disaster strikes Miami-Dade County; how to respond to a disaster quickly and effectively; and stress management.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of our corporate sponsor, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Florida.

Training sessions are highly encouraged. RSVP Online.

This hurricane season, be there for your neighbors... be there for your community!

"In the event that our community is hit by a hurricane or another disaster, the data bank will provide us with a list of names of volunteers who are willing to respond to help others in need," said Mark Kravitz, Esq., Chair of the Jewish Volunteer Center.

Past volunteer projects have included: clearing away post-hurricane debris; delivering hot meals, ice and supplies; and visits to homebound seniors pre- and post-hurricane to ensure their safety.

"We know that none of us can predict how we will be personally affected by a hurricane," said Jessica Kassin, JVERT Chair. "Adding your name to the data bank now indicates your willingness to help in the aftermath of a storm, should you be able do so."

To add your name to this unique Emergency Volunteer Data Bank, download the JVERT Volunteer Form, complete and submit it, following the instructions on the form. Please provide accurate contact information, specific skills, access to resources and other information that may be called upon in case of an emergency.
